DENTON (UNT), Texas -- In his latest book, The Echo of Battle: The Army's Way of War, Dr. Brian Linn, current president of the Society for Military History, shows how American military commanders and politicians have failed over the last 200 years to recognize the impact of competing martial traditions on decisions regarding Army doctrine. Discussing Dwight D. Eisenhower's, George Patton's, Colin Powell's and other commanders' leadership, and technologies from coastal artillery to the Abrams tank, Linn shows how leadership and weaponry have continually altered the Army's approach to conflict.

Linn, the Ralph R. Thomas Professor in Liberal Arts and a professor of history at Texas A&M University, will use passages from his book as he presents the inaugural lecture of the University of North Texas Military History Center Discussion Series on Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7 (Tuesday).

The free lecture, "The American Way of War: A New Look," begins at 7 p.m. in Room 122 of UNT's Wooten Hall, which is located one block west of Welch and Highland streets at 1121 Union Circle.

The UNT Military History Center has the goal of becoming the premier destination in the United States for the study of military history and has had a long tradition of sponsoring public programs. Since 1983, the center has held the invitation-only Alfred Hurley Military History Seminar -- named for a president and chancellor emeritus of UNT -- during the fall semester.

Dr. Geoffrey Wawro, the General Olinto Mark Barsanti Professor of Military History at UNT and director of the Military History Center, said the center is beginning the discussion series "to further enrich our offerings and outreach in military history."

"Dr. Linn is not only a distinguished scholar and president of the Society for Military History, but he is also a valued advisory fellow in our center, which means, in a way, he is 'coming home' for the evening," Wawro said.

In addition to The Echo of Battle, Linn is the author of The Philippine War, 1899-1902; Guardians of Empire: The U.S. Army and the Pacific, 1902-1940 and The U.S. Army and Counterinsurgency in the Philippine War, 1899-1902The Philippine War and Guardians of Empire both received the Society for Military History Distinguished Book Prize, making Linn the only author to win the prize twice.

Linn is a recipient of both a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. A Texas A&M faculty member since 1989, he taught at the National University of Singapore on a Fulbright Fellowship in 2009, and was the Harold K. Johnson Visiting Professor of Military History at the U.S. Army War College.

He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii and master's and doctoral degrees from Ohio State University.
