Eighteen science teachers from schools across the Dallas-Fort Worth to be honored

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Eighteen science teachers from schools across the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be honored at a dinner tonight, Oct. 10 (Tuesday) by the University of North Texas Regional Collaborative for Excellence in Science Teaching. The dinner will be held at the Radisson Hotel Denton, 2211 Interstate 35-E North, beginning at 6:00 p.m. State Senator Florence Shapiro, the head of the state Senate Committee on Education will be the keynote speaker. UNT President Dr. Gretchen Bataille and Provost Dr. Howard Johnson will also speak.

Dr. Jim Roberts, professor of physics and materials science at UNT and director of the UNT Regional Collaborative, says the collaborative has several goals. "It brings together school systems with both universities and industry. We are striving to build a network in the area that will connect the teachers to each other, the area schools to each other, UNT with area schools/teachers, and to produce a cadre of teachers in the North Texas area that will revolutionize science teaching in our area so that the youth of Texas might have a better opportunity to learn science, " he says.

The teachers who are being honored include: Athena Bivens, The Colony; Helena Cantrell, Fort Worth; Dawn Chegwidden, Flower Mound; Deidre Dykes, Fort Worth; Bethany Goerdel, Justin; Charlotte Haun, Edgecliff Village; Kathy Hootman, Sanger; Trisha Lana, Denton; Brian Long, Keller; Marty Mills, Denton; Sandra Ninemire, Carrollton; Celia Palmer, Dallas; Susan Petrey, Fort Worth; Larry Schenck, Denton; Stephanie Thompson, Double Oak; J'Nice Weis, Bedford; and Ashley Wright, Lewisville.
