Keyboard Auditions

Piano Auditions: Auditions are held on the Friday and Saturday immediately prior to the first week of classes. Sign-up sheets are located on the door of MU351 (Stefan Karlsson's office). Students should prepare a selection of their own choice. Ideally, this should be a standard or a well-known jazz composition which involves some improvisation. Also, be prepared to play a blues progression in a common key with a play-along record. This should demonstrate your ability to both comp and solo. Finally, you will be expected to voice chords using typical inversions, and read from both chord symbols and notes.

Zebras Auditions: Students must first complete their regular Jazz Lab audition before attempting a Zebras audition.

1) Keyboards: The audition requires the use of a synthesizer and will measure the student's understanding of electronic idioms. Emphasis is on sight reading of intricate note passages and improvisational skills.

2) Rhythm section and horns: Lab Band auditioners will recommend a number of qualified players to audition. They will perform a final audition during the first rehearsal.
