DENTON (UNT), Texas -- While the fictional New Directions of FOX TV's Glee are hoping to travel to New York City for regionals competition, members of the University of North Texas Glee Club will add to the money that they have already raised for a trip to Orlando, Fla., when they present their fall 2010 main performance Dec. 1-2.

The shows begin at 7 p.m. both evenings in the UNT Auditorium Building, which is located on West Hickory Street between avenues A and B. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased by credit card on UNT Glee's website or at the information desk on the third floor of UNT's University Union, which is located one block west of Welch and West Prairie streets. Tickets will also be sold at the door on the evenings of the performances on a first-come, first-serve basis, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

The ticket sales will help UNT Glee come closer to its goal of raising $12,000 to fund a trip to Orlando, Fla., this academic year. UNT Glee members want to meet and perform with the University of Central Florida Glee Club, which was formed a few months before UNT Glee.

Since the start of the 2010 fall semester, UNT Glee has held several fundraisers, including "Slush a Gleek," with UNT students, faculty and staff members paying small fees to throw a slushie in the face of a UNT Glee member -- to follow what the fictional New Directions members experience from other students in their high school on TV's Glee.

UNT Glee members have also sold T-shirts, held a bake sale and sponsored a talent show that was open to all UNT students, with proceeds benefiting UNT Glee.

While preparing for their fall 2010 main performance and raising money, UNT Glee members have also performed at several campus events for free, and were part of a benefit concert for charity sponsored by Interfaith Ministries of Denton, Inc.

UNT Glee formed last February after senior José Coira, a radio, television and film major and avid Glee fan, registered the club with the Student Activities Center. He then found a faculty adviser and advertised for auditions, wanting the club to be open to students of all majors who wanted to sing and dance as a hobby.

More than 100 students auditioned for UNT Glee, with about 30 selected for the show ensemble. Other students could volunteer for the group's publicity, fundraising and costume and prop teams. UNT Glee had its premiere performance May 7.

For the 2010 fall semester, auditions were held for two groups within UNT Glee -- students who wanted to primarily sing and students who wanted to concentrate on dancing. More than 180 students auditioned in August, with 35 chosen for the show choir and 24 chosen for the dance ensemble.

Both groups will perform separate and joint numbers at the Dec. 1 and 2 shows. The numbers will include a medley of songs by Journey as a tribute to the fictional New Directions. Journey's Don't Stop Believing was performed on three episodes of Glee, including the pilot episode that aired in May 2009 and the first season finale that aired a year later.

Other numbers will include Circus by Brittany Spears, who guest starred on Glee during the second episode of the second season; and Paparazzi and "Teeth" by Lady Gaga, who was the subject of a Glee episode last spring.
