Virtual
Library News
Volume
1, Number 1
Libraries and librarians provide wonderful services to users everywhere, but they often don’t do a very good job of marketing/advertising those services. The American Library Association’s "Campaign for America’s Libraries” is a multi-year public education campaign to speak loudly and clearly about the value of libraries and librarians in the 21st century. During 2003, academic and research libraries and librarians are featured. With that goal in mind, the staff of UNT Dallas virtual library has initiated a variety of marketing tools to "get the word out” about our unique library including this electronic newsletter. We hope you will benefit from it.
The purpose of the Virtual Library Newsletter is to keep students, faculty, staff, and interested patrons of the community informed about new events and both new and existing services that UNT Dallas Campus Library has to offer. Library services are far too often poorly marketed, and our goal is to get the word out about the wonderful resources available to our patrons. The best part of all is that it’s free to our students, faculty, and staff! Our knowledge and expertise won’t cost our patrons a dime. To meet our goal of reaching out to UNT Dallas and our surrounding service area we have included, and will continue to include, features in this newsletter that we think will be important to you and to your information needs.
The first question that patrons ask when they walk
through the door of the library for the first time is, "Where are the
books?"
The library maintains a core collection of print resources, but technology and e-resources are the primary components of the library's collection. This is a full service library. While more than 90 % of all materials needed by patrons will be found through e-resources with the assistance of the library staff, there may be materials that will need to be acquired from the Denton campus. The keys to using the Virtual Library effectively and efficiently are Plan Ahead and Ask the Staff. New services are constantly being added or improved.
Each newsletter we will feature a different subject designed specifically for courses offered at UNT Dallas that contains valuable resources for that subject offered at UNT Dallas Library for students and faculty. Many other subject guides are available now in the library or on the website (www.unt.edu/unt-dallas/librarysg.htm).
This semester we are proud to feature the Criminal Justice Subject Guide.
"Instruction and education" is one of the primary missions of UNT Dallas Virtual Library.
Both individual and group instruction are available upon request. Contact the library for more information.

* Info: "I’m a graduate of Duncanville (TX) High School, East Texas State
University (now Texas A&M Commerce; BA in English), Southern Methodist
University (Master of Religious Education) and the University of North Texas
(Master of Library Science). After graduating from UNT, I lived and worked in
Waco, TX, for ten years. Upon my return to Dallas, I was hired by Dallas
Public Library, where I worked for eleven years. When I read about the
opening of UNT Dallas, I immediately applied for a position as a
Librarian. I’m very excited about being here and about the future of this
Campus and our opportunity to provide some very unique library services. We’re
truly pioneers in this venture."

*Info: "I entered the SLIS program in the Fall of 2000 and immediately
began my first library job in Circulation and Reference at the Nelson
Memorial Library at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie,
Texas. After twenty five years of business management experience, reinventing
myself as a librarian has been tremendous fun! I worked several part time
jobs while completing my degree, including a semester at Baylor College of
Dentistry in Dallas at the Health Sciences Library and as a student assistant
at UNT Dallas Library. I graduated in May of 2003 and went to work
at Southern Methodist University in the Cox School of Business. When the
hiring freeze was lifted, I came back to UNT Dallas to continue the programs
I had started, such as developing projects for the library student assistants
to showcase their skills and promote our library services. I am thrilled to
be on UNT Dallas staff and to be involved in developing this
campus from the ground up. We have unlimited opportunities to be innovative
in working with our students, staff and faculty to facilitate their research
and information needs and to market our university to the community."

* Info: "I grew up in Tennessee and received my BA in psychology
from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis). I went back
home and taught special education at the junior high level on an emergency
certificate. After a year back in my hometown to remind me why I had left
just two weeks after graduating from high school to begin college, I moved to
Texas in 1970, with my last paycheck in my pocket and everything I owned in
my 1965 Corvair! I spent almost 25 years at Delta Air Lines, working in
reservations and ticket sales at both the airport and city ticket offices,
retiring in 1999 so I could come back to school and start my next career. I
graduated in August with my Masters in Information Science, with an advanced
certificate in Reference and am now working on a second advanced certificate
in Health Informatics. My interests are many, so I'm not sure where I'll end
up in the library world!" Now we know: Susie will start her new
career as a Reference Librarian at the University of Texas at Dallas.

* Info: "I have a B.A. from the Univ. of Texas at Dallas in
Interdisciplinary Studies and an M.S. in Library Science from UNT. My focus
of study is on virtual libraries and distributed learning in academic
libraries. There are many aspects of my work here at UNT Dallas Library
that I love, but my favorite part is being a part of a team that is committed
to information services in an innovative environment. Some of my
responsibilities in the library include helping students with projects,
answering reference questions, and teaching students to use electronic
resources and be comfortable in an electronic environment. I also spend a lot
of time developing new methods of library instruction through a WebCT section
that I created for the library, experimenting with web design, revising or
creating procedures for developing tools such as the subject guide, and
keeping up with new ideas and techniques in the information profession.
UNT Dallas' Virtual Library is a wonderful place to be, and I can’t
imagine a better place to practice my profession.”

* Info: "I am originally from the north, Indiana then Wisconsin, and then
moved to Texas about 15 years ago. I graduated from Bishop Lynch H.S. and
then got a bachelors degree in Biology from the University of Texas at
Dallas. I am now in my last semester of a masters degree in Digital Image Management in
the School of Library and Information Science. I am also getting married in
January and moving to Austin. I enjoy interacting with the students and helping them solve
their library or computer problems, or find what they are looking for in the
library or online. I hope to utilize my skills in imaging and computers to
help enhance the experience at the library on the campus of UNT-Dallas.”

* Info: "I am working on my Business Computer Information System degree
right now and by next May, 2004, I will graduate with a B.S. in both Criminal
Justice and B.C.I.S. After that I'm heading to medical school. Before and
during college, I was in the marines, where I was a mechanic. The rest of my
time is spent with my kids and training for boxing, which is a hobby for me.”

*Info: I was born and
raised in Oregon (for those of us who are clueless about geography, Oregon is
the state above California) and am a current student at Southwestern
Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie. I’m only one semester away from
receiving my BS in Elementary Education. I then plan on entering the SLIS
program and teaching third or fourth graders next fall. I greatly enjoy
working here and interacting with the students. A random fact about me is
that I come from a large family of 6 siblings.

Here’s what TexShare has to say about the program:
"The Card Program is a reciprocal borrowing program which allows registered users of participating TexShare libraries to obtain a TexShare card and use the card to borrow materials directly from other participating libraries. You must obtain a TexShare card from your home institution before going to other libraries. Special lending policies may apply at lending libraries. A list of participating TexShare libraries, lending policies, and further information on the Card Program may be found at the Card Program link above” (www.texshare.com).
So, come in to the library today and get your card! For more information ask a library staff member or go to www.texshare.edu for more information.
