UNT Dallas Campus sponsors open house at its new home on the future UNT at Dallas site

DENTON (UNTS), Texas -- On Tuesday, Jan. 16 (the first day of classes for the 2007 spring semester), the University of North Texas System will launch a new chapter in the history of higher education in the city of Dallas.

The new University of North Texas at Dallas -- destined to become the first freestanding, public university inside the Dallas city limits -- is still looming in the future. However, its forerunner, the UNT Dallas Campus, will officially open all of its operations and bring the first students -- and the first classes -- to the 264-acre site at 7300 Houston School Road (near the intersection with Camp Wisdom Road) that will be permanent home of the future university.

The day's events will formally begin with an 8:25 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony.

The official open house (welcoming all interested persons) will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include tours of the new facility throughout the day; and drawings for free tuition for one semester for new students and for book vouchers for new and continuing students.  View schedule of events.

UNT System Chancellor Lee F. Jackson and UNT Vice Provost for the Dallas Campus John Price will host the event.

Dignitaries on hand to celebrate this historic milestone will include Dallas Mayor Laura Miller; Texas Senator Royce West of Dallas; Texas Representative Helen Giddings of Dallas; City of Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Don Hill; as well as civic and community leaders from the city of Dallas and municipalities that border its southern sector.

School district administrators and middle school students from the Dallas, Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville and Lancaster independent school districts will tour the new facility and receive information on the importance of completing high school and earning a college degree between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The UNT Dallas Campus will continue to serve its students through the degree-granting authority of UNT in Denton until the new university is established.

According to the official 2006 fall headcount, on-site enrollment at the Dallas Campus is 1,533 students -- accounting for nearly 615 full-time equivalent students. As soon as enrollment reaches 1,000 FTE students, the UNT System can begin the process of establishing the new university.

Dallas Campus enrollment has grown substantially in recent years. Last fall, enrollment increased by more than seven percent and FTE enrollment was up by more than 10 percent over the fall 2005 figure. In fall 2005 the headcount enrollment jumped up more than 20 percent over the previous year and FTE enrollment was up more than 30 percent.
