The legacy of Mean Green Athletics: Stellar athletes, national champions, Olympic medallists and Hall of Famers
North Texas greats such as Abner Haynes, Don January, “Mean” Joe Greene, Hayden Fry, and Elmer and Delmer Brown charted a course that has been navigated over recent years by standouts Marilyn Marin, Chris Davis, Patrick Cobbs, Jailee Mitchell, Jamario Thomas, Casey Fitzgerald and many others.
In just the last eight years, Mean Green teams have been a part of four bowl games and have participated in NCAA postseason soccer and golf championships, as well as the NCAA basketball tournament for the second time in school history. Our track and field teams have had several athletes compete in the NCAA national indoor and outdoor meets.
North Texas’ tennis and swimming programs have gained tremendous respect, garnering regional and national rankings while fielding some of the youngest teams in the country. Our men’s basketball teams have won 20 games for three consecutive years. And, over the last six years, five UNT student-athletes have led the nation in a category of their respective sports, with Brooke Engel topping the women’s volleyball charts for two consecutive years.
The list of all-stars who proudly wear the green and white will escalate as UNT’s commitment to new facilities provides student-athletes with the ability to excel and become champions. BELIEVE IT!
"I travel to colleges across America looking for talent, and I can tell you that great athletic facilities are the cornerstone of every nationally competitive and recognized school.
A new stadium for North Texas will be good for the entire university, students, alumni, fans, donors, neighbors, everybody. I sense the pride. And I feel the excitement.

"All of the players in the National Football League love to brag about their alma maters, and I’m no different. I enjoyed my time at North Texas immensely and I’m always proud to tell people I played for the Mean Green.
The only thing missing from my experience at North Texas was a football stadium that I can put up against those that my NFL teammates played in during their college days. When they talk about the amenities of their locker rooms and having their fans right on top of the action, I’m not a part of the conversation ... yet!
A new stadium at North Texas will be the final piece that makes a Mean Green football player’s total experience comparable to — or better than — any in the nation. I believe it!”
