The term recuerdo can refer to both an experienced memory and to an object that conjures nostalgia in the personal and collective mind and that can be used to commemorate nationality and heritage. The artists participating in this exhibition incorporate elements of nostalgia either remembered or embodied through objects and locations, both public and private, where cultural commonalities exist. By doing so, their works attempt to capture a heritage on the periphery of everyday existence. Recuerdos: Nostalgia on the Periphery has been organized as part of the year-long celebration of the bicentennial of Mexican Independence from Spain and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution.
