DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Hundreds of University of North Texas students will help members of the community during UNT's observance of Make A Difference Day on Oct. 23 (Saturday). The national event, sponsored by USA Weekend magazine in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation, was first observed in 1990. Scheduled for the fourth Saturday of each October, the day is the largest community service effort in the nation, rallying corporations, government leaders, charitable organizations and individuals into action.

From 8 a.m. until noon, various UNT student volunteers will be working on different community service projects in Denton, Corinth, and Lewisville.

Students will check in for their assignments at UNT's Library Mall from 8 to 9 a.m. Amy Simon, director of UNT's Center for Leadership and Service, said 800 students are expected to participate this year, an increase over last year's total of 600.

"Make A Difference Day is a wonderful opportunity for UNT students to impact the local community," Simon said. "It is our hope that this is not only a day of service but leads to ongoing connections between students and the community."

Volunteer events include environmental projects, working with senior citizens, assisting children and painting.

Local organizations involved in UNT's observance of Make A Difference Day include The Nelson Center, Habitat for Humanity, Communities in Schools, Keep Denton Beautiful, Keep Lewisville Beautiful, Lewisville Lake, and the Denton Rehabilitation Center.

Amanda Frimpong, a sophomore pre-biochemistry major, said she enjoys volunteering as a way to meet other volunteers and help take care of communities that take care of her.

"I feel doing any form of volunteering work is very important," Frimpong said. "It's a way of giving back to an individual's community and almost a way of saying thank you."
