UNT student Jordan Diamond named as NextGen Leader
DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Jordan Diamond, a senior majoring in social work at the University of North Texas, has been selected as a Next Generation Nonprofit Leader by American Humanics. In addition to being named a NextGen Leader, Diamond will be awarded a $4,500 scholarship to complete an internship with a nonprofit organization during the spring 2011 semester. Diamond is the daughter of Theresa Diamond of McKinney and Harvey Diamond of Dallas and is a 2007 graduate of McKinney High School. Established in 1948, American Humanics is an alliance of academic institutions, nonprofit organizations and professional associations designed to prepare college and university students for professional and leadership positions in the nonprofit industry. The Next Generation Nonprofit Leaders Program began in January 2007 when W.K. Kellogg Foundation granted $5 million to American Humanics. AH will select a total of 1,000 NextGen Leaders through 2012 to receive scholarships and access to mentoring and support from a network of nonprofit leaders. AH is affiliated with more than 60 colleges and universities as well as 30 to 40 national nonprofit organizations and their local affiliates. As a part of her American Humanics requirement, Diamond will complete an internship in the spring 2011 semester, where she will practice her social work skills while learning the fundamentals of nonprofit management, including fundraising, event planning and other skills. "I think she's done a great job of preparing herself with her classes and getting involved with American Humanics program," said Dr. Lynn Jackson, professor of social work in the UNT Department of Rehabilitation, Social Work and Addictions. "Last year, she showed great leadership skills in coordinating the banquet for the Social Work Student Association in the spring and coordinating other students to assist in the process." As a NextGen Leader, Diamond will earn a certificate in nonprofit management and leadership American Humanics certification process, which will connect her to a network of nonprofit agencies. Certification includes participation in a multi-year, longitudinal study designed to illustrate the positive effects of competitive internship stipends on the recruitment and retention of skilled entry-level professionals prepared to enter the nonprofit sector. Diamond will also attend an American Humanics Management/Leadership Institute conference.

The UNT System Board of Regents approved the nomination of V. Lane Rawlins Nov. 12, beginning the 21-day period required by Texas law before they can officially appoint him to the presidency. Rawlins has been serving a one-year appointment as UNT president.
