DENTON (UNT), Texas -- To celebrate its publication of the 2010-2011 Texas Almanac and the one-year anniversary of its move to the University of North Texas campus, the Texas State Historical Association will hold an open house from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 30 (Monday) at its office in Stovall Hall, Room 175.

Admission to the open house is free. Refreshments will be served, and those attending will be able to purchase copies of the 736-page Texas Almanac. The almanac was published by the Dallas Morning News Inc. from 1904 to 2008. This year's edition is the first to appear under the TSHA imprint. The Dallas Morning News, Inc. donated the almanac's inventory, trademark, archives and other materials to the TSHA in May 2008, five months after the association announced it was moving its office to UNT from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Wendy K. Wilkins, UNT provost and vice president for academic affairs, and J. Kent Calder, executive director of TSHA, will offer remarks. The almanac's managing editor, Elizabeth Alvarez, and assistant editor, Robert Plocheck, will also attend.

Calder said the association "could not have found a better partner than UNT to build a future for Texas history."

"The addition of the Texas Almanac to our other core programs serves to increase the relevance and reach of all that we do," he said.

TSHA was founded on March 2, 1897 -- the 61st anniversary of the Texas Declaration of Independence -- and is considered in academic circles as the nation's most dynamic regional history organization.

TSHA works closely with UNT's Department of History as well as with the UNT Libraries' Digital Projects Unit. Dr. Randolph B. "Mike" Campbell, Regents Professor of history, serves as the chief historian for the association and is the editor of its journal, the Southwestern Historical Quarterly. The association is working with the Digital Projects Unit to digitize the archives of the Texas Almanac and 100 volumes of the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, and place them on the UNT Libraries' Portal to Texas History.

TSHA provides programs and services for educators and students at all levels and for others who are interested in Texas history. Its educational programs include:

TSHA also offers the Handbook of Texas Online, a multidisciplinary encyclopedia of Texas history, geography, and culture that contains more than 27,000 articles and is constantly updated. In addition, the association offers an annual meeting for those interested in Texas history. The 2010 meeting, which is expected to attract 700, is scheduled for March 4-6 in Dallas.
