meaning "Consumed in the service of others," was selected by the founders based
on the concept of dedication of librarians and other information professionals
to the service of others. Selection for membership in Beta Phi Mu is by
invitation of the faculty from an American Library Association accredited
professional degree program.
Question: As a student, can I join Beta Phi Mu?

General Requirements:
-
Election for membership in the University of North Texas
Department of Library and Information Sciences Beta Lambda Chapter of Beta
Phi Mu is by invitation of the Department of Library and Information
Sciences faculty and is based on academic performance and professional
promise. Selection for membership takes place near the end of each
semester (Fall, Spring and Summer) and pending graduates (those
participating in the Capstone Experience and who pass Capstone) are eligible
for consideration.
Founding of Beta Phi Mu
Beta Phi Mu, the library and information studies international
honor society, was founded at the University of Illinois in August, 1948, by a
group of leading librarians and library educators. Aware of the notable
achievements of honor societies in other professions, they believed that such a
society would have much to offer librarianship and library education. The first
initiation was held in the spring of 1949 at the University of Illinois. The
society was ably served by Rolland Stevens as first President and Harold Lancour
as first Executive Secretary.
Its significance was recognized in 1969 when Beta Phi Mu was formally admitted
to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies. In 1997, the
society became an affiliate of the American Library Association.
Insignia
The insignia of Beta Phi Mu is the dolphin and anchor, mark of
the Venetian printer, Aldus Manutius; he strove to create beautiful editions of
the Greek and Latin Classics and dedicated his life to making his works
accessible. Gold and black keys and pins bearing the Beta Phi Mu insignia are
available to members. Inquire from Beta Phi Mu, the national office.
Membership
Over 26,000 graduates of accredited library and information
studies programs in the United States and Canada have been initiated. There are
43 active chapters based in professional library and information studies
schools.
