Prospective Student-Athlete Information - Men's Golf

Men's Golf Questionnaire

We are excited about your interest in the University of North Texas and Mean Green men's golf. A golf magazine once called the University of North Texas the "Notre Dame" of men’s golf -- for a very good reason. With 78 tournament championships, including four NCAA crowns and 27 conference titles to its credit, North Texas has earned international recognition in the sport.

In all, the Mean Green has competed in the NCAA Tournament 28 times as a team and placed in the top 10 on 16 of those occasions. The program’s long list of successes also includes seven Lone Star Conference titles, two Gulf Coast Conference championships, 13 Missouri Valley Conference titles, three Southland Conference championships, one Big West Conference title and a Sun Belt Conference Championship in 2003.

Under head coach Brad Stracke, the program is having a rebirth to national prominence. This season the Mean Green achieved its highest ranking in seven seasons and won its first team tournament title in over five seasons. Individually, North Texas was the only school in the nation to send to players to the NCAA Men's Golf Regional in Rodolfo Cazaubon and Carlos Ortiz. Cazaubon recorded the lowest stroke average in seven seasons at North Texas and was the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and named to the all-conference team. Ortiz was also named to the all-conference team and he recorded the third lowest round in the nation during the season with a 64.

Quick Hits On North Texas
A member of the Sun Belt Conference, North Texas has captured 14 conference championships since 2001. Individually, 69 Mean Green student-athletes were named All-Sun Belt Conference during the 2009-10 school year. This past season, the Mean Green won two conference championships and finished in the top three at conference championships in eight sports. Many of the teams posted their best seasons in program history.

In 2009-10, four Mean Green sports saw postseason play. The men's basketball team won the Sun Belt Conference tournament title and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The women's tennis also won a conference championship, its first Sun Belt title in school history. Two Mean Green golfers, freshmen Rodolfo Cazaubon and Carlos Ortiz, were selected to play in the NCAA Men's Golf Regional in Bremerton, Wash., in May, making North Texas the only team in the nation with two true freshmen individual players participating in an NCAA Regional. Fifteen track& field athletes qualified for the NCAA Championship Preliminary Rounds in 12 different events in May, and four moved on in two events to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., in June.

Located on Bonnie Brae Avenue across from the new athletic center, the Mean Green Softball and Golf Facility houses indoor putting and driving areas. Next door is the Mean Green Office Complex and Gymnasium, where the golf coaches have their offices, team meeting rooms and a display case for their trophies.

The golf team can also go its outdoor practice facility in front of the new athletic center. The facility includes, a putting green, driving range, short-game practice area and four holes. The North Texas golf teams practice on some of the finest golf courses in the area, including Eagle Point Golf Club, Oakmont Country Club, Doral Tesoro, Tour 18, Lantana Golf Course, Robson Ranch, Trophy Club, Trails of Frisco and Bridlewood Country Club.

Academic Athletic Services
In the Fall of 2005, the academic and compliance staff relocated to the Mean Green Village. Located on Bonnie Brae, the new Student-Athlete Development Center is three times the size of the former academic center. The Center serves as the cornerstone of the Mean Green Village and is only a short walk from the surrounding sports facilities.
