Admission Checklist for the Department of Learning Technologies Computer Education and Cognitive Systems Master’s Program

If you have submitted a complete application and have not been contacted, please contact the Department's Main Office.

Admission to the Master’s Program in Computer Education and Cognitive Systems is a two step process:

  1. Admission to the Graduate School, and
  2. Admission to the Computer Education and Cognitive Systems program.

Applicants begin by submitting the following materials to the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies at the University of North Texas at least one semester prior to the planned date of enrollment. Application materials are reviewed by the Graduate School to determine if the applicant meets the minimal requirements for admission to the Graduate School.

Step 1.  Apply to the University of North Texas Toulouse School of Graduate Studies:

  1. Apply to the UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies
    • You need to complete the Graduate School minimum qualifications before you will be considered for admission to the Department of Learning Technologies.  
    • International students should use the International Student application.
  2. Forward official transcripts from all accredited institutions of higher learning attended (including graduate work). These transcripts are used by the Graduate School to calculate the applicant’s GPA in order to determine whether he or she meets the requirement of a GPA of at least 2.8 while pursuant the bachelor’s degree or a GPA of at least 3.0 over the last 60 hours of the bachelor’s degree or a GPA of 3.4 or higher while completing a master’s degree.
  3. Each applicant must have taken the Graduate Record Examination and submit scores on the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing portions. Low GRE scores do not automatically eliminate an applicant from consideration for the program in Computer Education and Cognitive Systems. Applicants are encouraged to submit other evidence of ability if they believe the GRE does not accurately reflect their potential to do well in the Computer Education and Cognitive Systems Master’s Program.
  4. Application fee.

Step 2. Computer Education and Cognitive Systems Master’s Program Materials:

  1. At least two letters of recommendation are required with each application. These letters of recommendation must address the applicant’s abilities and potential for comprehending graduate-level materials, engaging in analytical and critical thinking, writing at a graduate level, and completing a thesis or capstone project that may involve statistics or data analysis. Please use the Request For Reference (PDF Format) when requesting these letters.

  2. A personal resume or vita that includes the applicant’s previous work and/or educational experiences.

  3. A one- to two-page personal statement from the applicant stating his or her goals or reasons for applying to the master’s program in Computer Education and Cognitive Systems and the applicant’s chosen area of focus in the program (Teaching and Learning or Instructional Systems Design). Applicants should also provide a brief narrative that explains, ties together, or gives context to the scores and information provided in the other application materials (e.g., vita; GRE; graduate application information; the strength of their abilities in reading, writing, critical thinking and mathematics; the relevance of their personal, career, or educational experiences) for the area of Computer Education and Cognitive Systems they hope to study. Applicants should describe their career and research interests for the degree and thesis/non-thesis option, including what they hope to do after the degree is earned.

  4. NOTE: Applicants seeking the Teaching and Learning concentration will most likely have a valid Texas Teacher Certification and this should be noted on the application.
