Information Systems

The mission of the Information Systems Program of Study (IS POS) is to provide courses that will prepare students for the job market in tasks that primarily relate to computer/information technology. Employers seek professionals who can demonstrate creative use of computer technology to further their business goals. Students need to gain the skills to properly utilize computer information technology at different levels of expertise. Computer technology expertise and knowledge that goes beyond that of an average user is a requirement in our professional activities. Courses in this program blend hands-on experience and theory as well as classroom instruction and the flexibility of online delivery. The IS POS caters to the information industry by building a competitive set of knowledge and skills in three relevant areas:

General Requirements

  1. Total coursework is 36 credit hours (12 courses).
  2. Enroll for 120 hours of professional fieldwork (practicum) or verify 6 months of library experience at the professional level.
  3. During the final semester before graduation, enroll in Capstone and take and pass the comprehensive examination.

Delayed Entry Provisions

It is not uncommon for students who enter the Department to alter their study plans after they become better acquainted with various aspects of the Department and Profession. If this is the case, and you would like to begin preparation in the Information Systems Program of Study, you are welcome to begin the set of prescribed courses. However, if you have taken prior courses that are not listed among the courses of the Information Systems Program of Study, they will not be counted toward completion of the program of study. In some cases this may result in a student’s acquiring more than the usual 36 hours of course credits required for the General Practitioners Program.

Special Projects

In some cases, students may take, or may already have taken technical courses at another school or college that are equivalent to courses in the Information System Program of Study. With permission of the Faculty Advisor to the Information Systems Program of Study, and concurrence by the Associate Dean of the Department, a special projects course may be devised for the student to demonstrate mastery of the area of prior study.
