DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Dances inspired by the struggles of divorce, the comfort of a mom and the support of a community are among the originally choreographed works to be presented by students in the University of North Texas Department of Dance and Theatre.

The advanced choreography students will showcase their works in Synchronized Imbalances: New Choreography Concert, under the artistic direction of UNT dance professor Shelley Cushman. Performances are at 8 p.m. Dec. 3 and 4 (Friday and Saturday) and 2:30 p.m. Dec. 5 (Sunday) in the  University Theatre in the Radio, Television, Film and Performing Arts Building, corner of Welch and Chestnut streets. Tickets are $5. Call 940-565-2428. Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Students' works are:

  • Anna Olvera -- "The Itch" -- Life is more than just making money to get by and having a rigid schedule. Get "The Itch" to try something new; most likely that pathway will start a great new journey.
  • Anna Womack -- "Guess Who's Not Coming To Dinner?" -- A narrative piece about the struggles and process of divorce.
  • Amelia Wert -- "The Television is Watching Me Again" -- This piece seeks to represent the differing relationships and circumstances that bring people to need to stay in a motel. Based on separate rooms within this motel, the work focuses on themes of insomnia, isolation, love and loss, overlaid by the hypnotic glow of a television.
  • Ashley Craddock -- "In This Place" -- Within many lies the nature to clutch one's sorrows close to one's chest, never revealing the pain to those around him for fear of appearing weak. However, "man when he does not grieve, hardly exists." The beauty and strength that surrounds this disquieted state is what compels me to explore the very nature of it through movement.
  • Larissa Chobany – "Woven into Unity" -- This piece discovers how strong the bond of community is in times of great sacrifice. When we are looking fear in the eye, what is it that gives us the strength to persevere and conquer?
  • Alek Trail -- "Inequalstasis" -- This piece follows five different entities on a journey towards discovering what their independent state of balance is. Through this quest they experience all ends of the spectrum as well as what they will soon see as an abstracted center. By witnessing each others' path, they discover how their instabilities create their own unique stasis.
  • Nicki Hieronymus -- "With Time" -- There is a relationship that is built and continually worked on between a person and a mother. This relationship has strength so substantial that through time, the bonds are never broken and the comfort and support will continuously remain sturdy. From early childhood to adulthood, one of the people that will constantly exist to provide support, love and encouragement is a mother.
  • Rachel Caldwell -- "Certain Uncertainty" -- This original dance/music collaborative work, with music composed by Ryan Pivovar, is set for four dancers accompanied by a solo cello and loop. "Certain Uncertainty" explores the experience of blindness.
  • Tina Jefferson -- "Look After Abbot; Love and Other Curses" -- This piece is inspired by the overwhelming and ever present loneliness a person can feel.
  • Cassie Farzan Panah -- "Gravity of Deception" -- Our pride causes us to believe that when we are placed in situations of temptation we are in control. "Gravity of Deception" defines temptation and the effects our choices have on others.
