Education professor wins Ted Booker Award

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Dr. Rudy Rodriguez, visiting professor in the College of Education at the University of North Texas, received the Ted Booker Award from the Texas Association of Teacher Educators on Oct. 24 in Corpus Christi.

The association presents the award to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of teacher education. The award is given in memory of Ted Booker, a former dean at Texas Woman's University.

Rodriguez, a professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Administration at UNT, began his career in teaching in South Texas and later served as director of bilingual education for the Fort Worth school district from 1969 to 1973. Rodriguez served on the Texas Woman's University faculty from 1975 to 2002 as bilingual/ESL program director. While at TWU, he also served as professor and chair for the Department of Reading and Bilingual Education from 1987 to 1998 and as executive assistant to the president for Community Relations and Diversity from 1998 to 2000. He joined the UNT faculty in 2002 as director of the bilingual/English as a Second Language Program and professor of teacher education and administration. In 2005, Rodriguez produced a video about the history of bilingual education, The Texas Bilingual Education Story: Celebrating Our Legacy, for the Texas Association of Bilingual Education.

"He never stops working to ensure the welfare of his students and their opportunities for professional growth, " Dr. Mary Harris, interim chair of the UNT Department of Teacher Education and Administration, said in her nomination letter for Rodriguez. "He understands well the concept of teacher education pipelines, seeking support for high school students who are future bilingual/ESL teacher candidates and for advanced teacher candidates who are the future leaders of bilingual/ESL education in Texas."

The Texas Association of Teacher Educators includes teachers, administrators and school and regional service staff developers. The group works to improve teacher centers, pre-service preparation, teacher certification and state and national education programs.
