Co-captain of North Texas Dancers reaches finals in spirit contest

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- University of North Texas students Caris Tschauner, co-captain of the North Texas Dancers, has reached the finals of the 2006 Samsung Sideline Spirit Award Contest sponsored by AthlonSports.com.

Members of university cheerleading squads and spirit groups enter the competition by filling out an application on the magazine's website and submitting photos of themselves showing their school spirit. Every three weeks, the Athlon editors select one person to represent each of the major college conferences. The profiles and photos of each participant are displayed on the Athlon Sports website. Visitors to the site can vote for their favorite and post comments on the message boards. Tschauner, a sophomore psychology major from Odessa, competed in Round Three of the competition against representatives from six other football conferences. She was selected to represent the Sun Belt Conference in the round after she and four other North Texas Dancers, and four members of the North Texas Cheer squad, submitted applications and photos.

Tschauner advanced to the finals of the competition after winning Round Three by more than 35,800 votes over the second place finisher. She will now compete against the top finishers in Rounds One and Two, and the yet-to-be-determined top finisher of Round Four. The finals will begin after Round Four ends at midnight on Saturday, Nov. 25.

The student receiving the most votes in the finals will be featured in a photo shoot in Athlon Sport's 2007 college football magazine and receive a Samsung LCD flat-panel television, a Samsung sports camcorder, a hi-fi conversion DVD recorder, and $1,000.
