DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The face on the cover of the Oct. 15 issue of Library Journal -- representing the Class of 2005 in this year's "Placements & Salaries" feature -- is Shikun Jiang who earned her master's degree in information science in the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences.

Today, Jiang, known to her friends as KK, is an Oak Ridge Institute for Science Education Fellow at the Information Center of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.

According to SLIS Dean Herman L. Totten, after earning her bachelor's degree in engineering in electronics and information technology from South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, Jiang selected UNT as the right university to continue her studies after reading about SLIS in Peterson's Guide to Graduate Study .

In the LJ article, in which she expresses gratitude to her SLIS professors -- Dr. Ana Cleveland and Dr. Jiangping Chen -- Jiang says, "My bachelor's degree was in pure technology. It was too 'cold' and wasn't exactly the field in which I wanted to work."

Then she told LJ that UNT provided the "warmth" of human interaction to go with her technological expertise and skills.

"I found out what a wonderful field medical informatics is, with its interactions with people and its connections to public health. It is a field that really helps people. I loved our class studies in the information-seeking behavior of healthcare providers," Jiang said. (The SLIS program in medical informatics most recently was ranked third in the nation by peers participating in a U.S. News and World Report survey.)

Library Journal is acknowledged to be the largest circulating trade publication in the western world.

"We are overjoyed at having one of our outstanding graduates showcased as the representative of the nation's entire information science class of 2005," Totten said.
