Meet Our New President

Scott Ransom, DO, MBA, MPH

Scott Ransom, DO, MBA, MPH, is the new president of UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth.

As president, Dr. Ransom oversees a growing academic health center that includes four schools - the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Public Health and the School of Health Professions. More than 250 full-time faculty and 550 part-time faculty work with almost 1,100 students who are training to be osteopathic physicians, researchers, public health officers, physician assistants and other health professionals.

A graduate of the former University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, Mo., currently Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Ransom, 43, is a fellow in many professional organizations including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Physician Executives, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Board of Medical Management, and the Certifying Commission in Medical Management.

Dr. Ransom earned a master of business administration degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and a master of public health degree from Harvard University.

Prior to joining the health science center, Dr. Ransom served as the executive director of the program for healthcare improvement and leadership development and a professor with tenure in the obstetrics and gynecology department in the medical school, and the health management and policy department in the school of public health at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He also served as the director of women’s health and gynecology at the University of Michigan and the director of women’s health and gynecology at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center.

Since 2003, Dr. Ransom has led a research team that focuses on improving healthcare delivery, women’s health, leadership development and performance improvement. His research efforts have garnered significant grant funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Blue Cross Blue Shield and private foundations.

Prior to joining the University of Michigan, Dr. Ransom was senior vice president and chief quality officer at the Detroit Medical Center, a $1.8 billion, seven-hospital health care system. While there, he was instrumental in implementing a comprehensive quality improvement program and clinical information system.
Before joining the Detroit Medical Center, Dr. Ransom was medical director and ob/gyn regional division head for the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. During his nine years in Detroit, Dr. Ransom was also a member of the ob/gyn faculty at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Ransom has published more than 100 articles, chapters and abstracts and seven books on topics related to clinical improvement, quality and leadership. His most recent book, The Healthcare Quality Book: Vision, Strategy and Tools, provides a roadmap to improving health care quality.

He is immediate past president of the American College of Physician Executives, past president of the Certifying Commission in Medical Management and a delegate to the American Medical Association. He serves on several boards, including the Healthcare Leadership Institute at General Electric Corporation, the Center for Innovation at the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Morgan Executive Development Institute, the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, the Physician Executive Journal, and the Journal for Medical Quality.

Dr. Ransom and his wife, Elizabeth Ransom, MD, have three children, Kelly, 14; Christopher, 11; and Sarah, 9. Dr. Elizabeth Ransom is an otolaryngologist and currently vice chair of the Board of Governors and residency director of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at Henry Ford Health System.
