The mission of Academic Computing
Services (ACS) is to provide computing and information services in
support of research, instruction, and learning. Academic Computing
Services supports student learning and faculty research by providing
a first point of contact for computing use on campus; provides
student computing services that includes the operation of the ISB
110 General Access and Adaptive lab; maintains an easily-accessible
and comprehensive help desk and a technology infrastructure for managing
calls for assistance; employs well-trained and professionally active
research technical consultants; supports central computing systems for
instruction; offers extensive documentation and educational materials on
information technology; and conducts training on current, relevant digital
research and production applications.
Academic Computing Services is a division of the University
of North Texas Computing and Information
Technology Center (CITC) that
provides a variety of computing services to the academic community.
ACS is located in the
Information
Sciences Building,
accessible via ISB 119 -- the main entrance to the Computing
and Information Technology Center. The CITC general
telephone number, 940-565-2324, will connect you to someone in
Academic Computing Services. TDD access is available at
1-800-RELAY-TX.

ACS is divided into the following areas, each of
which provides specific services to the academic community:
- CITC Helpdesk provides in-person and telephone consulting services,
hands-on instruction, and documentation to student, faculty and
staff users of centralized computing and network facilities at UNT.
- ACS Student Computing Services includes support of the ACS
General Access Lab & Adaptive Lab.
The lab, located in ISB 110, is part of the campus-wide system of General
Access Labs available to all UNT students. The mission of this
lab is to provide general services to the UNT community with an
emphasis on the special features that Academic Computing
Services has to offer including helpdesk support and research
assistance. Additionally the ACS lab is the designated adaptive
lab on campus providing state-of-the-art adaptive equipment for
those who need it. For more information

The lab hours usually follow those of the Science and Technology
Library.
- Research and
Statistical Support Services
provides
support services on data acquisition and statistical analyses
for faculty members and students at UNT.
The data acquisition service includes access
to data from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and
Social Research (ICPSR), Center for Research in Security Prices
(CRSP), Standard & Poor's COMPUSTAT II, other data
resources, and downloadable data for political and social
research. Other services include consultation, application
support, and instruction.
- The ASC
High-Performance Computing Initiative provides
a number of cluster systems which are designed
for compute-intensive scientific research.
ACS also supports several other centrally-administered
computer systems which
are available for research and instruction.
- Documentation and Training
Services provides written and on-line
documentation for a variety of software products supported by
the Computing Center.
Documentation Services also produces
Benchmarks
Online, a monthly Web-based
newsletter.
Coordination of Academic Computing Short
Courses is done by the Documentation
services group. ACS Short Courses are open to students, faculty
and staff members and are offered on a variety of topics from
host system usage to creating home pages on the World Wide Web.
- The Call Tracking Administration Group
is responsible for the Remedy
Action Request System and for knowledgebase development as well as
Microsoft and other software licensing.
- Data Managment Services is responsible for
research data entry and automated scanning
services for test scoring and course evaluations.
