Introduction to the UNT Libraries

Workshops will last approximately one hour and will be given in Willis Library, Room 035.  There will be a PowerPoint introduction to the Libraries given by UNT Librarians, a brief demonstration of one of the general periodical databases, followed by a walking tour of the first and fourth floors of Willis Library.  This workshop meets requirements for PSYC 1000.

Introduction to Research: Finding Books and Articles Workshops

These workshops will focus on using the UNT Libraries catalog and give a more in-depth look at some of the general periodical index databases.  It will meet in the Willis Library Learning Center (W 136), immediately to the left as you enter the Library doors (not the General Access Lab).  It will last approximately an hour, and there will be hands-on applications.

Effective Internet Searching Workshops

You can Google anything.  But when you start to sift through the millions of results, how do you know what information is reliable?  In this workshop, the student will be shown:

  • How to evaluate web sites for accuracy and reliability

  • Tips and tricks for using search engines more effectively 

  • Other search engines that may work better for a specific subject

  • How to look up the owner of a website

It will meet in the Willis Library Learning Center (W 136), immediately to the left as you enter the Library doors (not the General Access Lab).  It will last approximately an hour, and there will be hands-on applications.

Graduate Student Workshops

These workshops are open to any graduate students, and will include:

  • Hands-on experience with some of the general periodical databases which contain many full-text scholarly articles;
  • Digital Dissertations, the major database for searching dissertations; 
  • Interlibrary loan;
  • Setting up alerts within a database.  You will have the opportunity to set up a journal or search alert.  If you want to set up a search alert, please come prepared with a viable search. 
  • If time allows, more subject-specific databases will be covered. 

The workshops will take place in the Willis Library Learning Center (W 136), immediately to the left as you enter the Library doors (not the General Access Lab).  The Thursday workshop will last approximately ninety minutes.  On Saturdays, the workshop will probably last two hours.

Drop-in Searching Workshops for Graduate Students

These workshops are on a drop-in basis and will be held in the Science/ Technology Classroom, Science / Technology 103a.  A science librarian and a humanities / social science librarian will be present to work with you on refining your research queries and database searches, and will help you develop a viable search and set up a search alert. If you are unable to attend one of these sessions, please contact the Willis Library Reference Desk (ex 3245) or Sci/Tech (ex 4745) to set up an appointment with your subject liaison to discuss your research needs, or fill out the form located at http://www.library.unt.edu/forms/ref/rbaelec.htm.
