Nine other countries joined the United States in an escalated response to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria on Friday, with plans to use more airstrikes, to strengthen moderate Syrian rebel groups and to recruit support from friendly governments in the region. Earlier this week, Islamic militants executed a second American journalist, Steven J. Sotloff, and President Obama vowed to punish ISIS.
Mr. Obama will give an interview about the crisis in the Middle East on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” On Sunday, the journalist Chuck Todd will take over as the new host of the show. A roundtable of mayors will discuss the threat Islamist terrorists possibly pose to American cities. Mayors Marilyn Strickland of Tacoma, Wash., Bill Peduto of Pittsburgh and Mick Cornett of Oklahoma City, will appear on NBC.
Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, said he planned to introduce a bill next week to revoke citizenship for Americans who support ISIS. He will explain the initiative on ABC’s “This Week.” Representatives Peter T. King, Republican of New York, and Adam Smith, Democrat of Washington, will also appear on the show to discuss ISIS.
On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, and Representative Dutch Ruppersberger, Democrat of Maryland, will weigh in on the American response to the situations in Iraq and Ukraine. Henry Kissinger, former secretary of state during the Nixon and Ford administrations, said he believed Iran was more of a national security threat than ISIS. He will discuss his thinking and his new book, “World Order,” on CBS.
Another group of mayors will debate the national security threat from ISIS on CNN’s “State of the Union,” including Michael Nutter, mayor of Philadelphia, Marty Walsh, mayor of Boston, and Kevin Faulconer, mayor of San Diego. On “Fox News Sunday,” former Gov. Mitt Romney, who was the 2012 Republican presidential candidate, will give his thoughts on the state of the Republican Party and upcoming midterm elections. Later on the show, Representative Michael McCaul, Republican of Texas, and Senator Robert Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, will discuss Mr. Obama’s strategy to deal with the Islamist militants. Mr. Menendez will also appear on Telemundo’s “Enfoque.”
The White House will delay executive action on immigration reform before the midterm elections, officials said Saturday. Clarissa Martinez-De-Castro, deputy vice president of the office of research, advocacy and legislation at the National Council of La Raza, and Jorge Mario Cabrera, spokesman for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, will discuss Mr. Obama’s decision to wait on policy changes on Univison’s “Al Punto.”
On ABC, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will discuss the Wilderness Act, which turns 50 this year.
