LUBBOCK – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service’s North Region will conduct their annual 4-H and FFA beef, lamb, goat and swine project training for those new to exhibiting livestock from 9 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in the Texas Tech Animal and Food Science Building.
The building is located northwest of United Spirit Arena on the Texas Tech University campus at Lubbock.
“The main purpose of the training is to teach the basic principles of livestock management as it relates to facility maintenance, selection, nutrition, animal health, handling, showmanship and transportation,” said Robert Scott, AgriLife Extension agent in Hockley County.
Scott said the Quality Assurance program will also be part of the training curriculum. He said the program is meant to ensure the safe and legal use of drugs or medications to facilitate the ethical care, development and exhibition of livestock.
He said all youth participants will have the opportunity to complete the “Quality Counts” training and take the verification test required prior to exhibiting at a major livestock show.
“A main point we encourage parents and leaders to remember above all else, is that all youth livestock projects should be used as vehicles to further positive youth development,” Scott said.
Individual pre-registration is $10 due upon arrival.
