Philosophers Put Their Minds to Expanding Their Role in Public Affairs – Faculty – The Chronicle of Higher Education

Yet another article on philosophers making an impact!

Nice to see Michael O’Rourke (Idaho), Nancy Tuana (Penn State), Andrew Light (George Mason), and Paul Thompson and Kyle Powys Whyte (Michigan State) all quoted in the article.

Martha Nussbaum, on the other hand, may wish she hadn’t said the following:

“If we are not in Washington, that is because a conscious decision has been made not to invite us there,” say Ms. Nussbaum, noting that President Obama has not reached out to her even though he has known her for years. “The problem is with anti-intellectualism and the general nature of media and politics in the U.S., not with philosophers.”

Some of us go to Washington pretty regularly, the “Engaging Public Philosophy” conference was held there (not by chance), and Andrew Light, among others, is based there.

Guess we anti-intellectuals forgot to wait for our invitation!
