Lidia opened her own restaurant in the Strip District in Pittsburgh where other Italian-American immigrants also started earlier businesses. But Pittsburgh's other well known "Little Italy" is called Bloomfield. In this episode, Lidia shares recipes from both of these areas, Braised Veal Shank, Olive Oil Mashed Potatoes and Peas with Bacon. She also visits with Maria Merante, a wonderful Italian American woman who left her mark in Pittsburgh.

Many Italians from the northwestern coastal region of Liguria settled in the San Francisco area, and it's not surprising that they brought their Cioppino with them. At the popular Scoma's restaurant, located right on the water, the Cioppino is a little different than what you would find in Italy but certainly inspired by the original Ligurian version.
