Biography & Interests
Since 2005 I have worked as Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion Studies at the University of North Texas (UNT), which is located just north of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. In 2008 I also became Assistant Director of the Center for the Study of Interdisciplinarity (CSID). I received my PhD in philosophy in 2004 from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. My research concerns the connection between knowledge production and knowledge use. Knowledge production tends to be disciplinary, whereas some of the most interesting use of knowledge by academics is interdisciplinary. Similarly, the use of knowledge by non-academic society requires transdisciplinary engagement. Yet we continue to reward academics mostly for producing and disseminating knowledge only within their own discipline. How can we instead encourage academics to branch out and have an impact beyond their own field?
I am interested in the connection between knowledge production and knowledge use, scholarly communication, and the ways in which academics are evaluated. My research focuses on peer review at public science and technology funding agencies.
