Yaakov Israel for TIME

It is not enough, or even necessary, for a leader to be exceptionally good at his or her chosen discipline. What a leader must be exceptionally good at, however, is inspiring others to believe in a shared vision. That’s hard to do, especially when a young scientist, entrepreneur or activist has had only a short time to form a plan and build a team. But in turbulent times such as these, when established leaders can seem short on answers to questions of global importance, it is often the young we look to for inspiration. So earlier this year TIME editors and writers set out to find some of these leaders of tomorrow who are working hard to change their worlds today. Here we share our discoveries—six young people we’re delighted to include in our first class of Next Generation Leaders. We will be introducing six more in the Fall.
