The Ins and Outs of Rust Haustoria

Rust diseases caused by fungi of the order Pucciniales afflict a wide range of plants, including cereals, legumes, ornamentals, and fruit trees, and pose a serious threat to cropping systems and global food security. Peter Dodds and colleagues discuss the specialized biology of haustorium touching on topics from the haustorium specialized metabolism to the evolutionary divergence of effector candidates.

Structural Correlates of Rotavirus Cell Entry

Stephen Harrison and colleagues use live-cell fluorescence imaging to follow rotavirus entry and penetration into the cytosol of its ~700Å inner capsid particle. Combining their results with high resolution structural information about the viral components suggest a molecular model for membrane disruption and DLP penetration.
