Scottsdale ArtWalk, which celebrates 40 years this October, made MSN Travel/U.K.'s lists of the 10 best walks in the world for a culture fix.

Scottsdale's ArtWalk is lauded by the travel site as a "casual affair — people stroll along at their own pace, dipping in and out of whichever galleries take their fancy, and stopping off along the way to have a drink and a bite to eat or simply sit by a fountain and enjoy a bit of people-watching."

It is the only American cultural stroll listed.

Veronica Graffius, Scottsdale Gallery Association president, said the Anniversary ArtWalk will kick-off the art season with an energized commitment to drawing more locals to a weekly event that has garnered international attention.

"We are going to be collaborating with other groups to make it a more festive and fun year," Graffius said. "We're putting on a lot of new things that will help create a buzz and make things more exciting."

The Anniversary ArtWalk from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 23, will feature marching bands from the Scottsdale Unified School District on Main Street, food trucks on Marshall Way and live music on at least two stages.

Other places named in the MSN online story as cultural strolls were:

  • Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the world's largest open-air galleries with 500 works by 100 international artists displayed among gardens, woods and a lake.

  • Western Cape, South Africa, Bushman's Kloof in South Africa's Western Cape is a five-star wellness retreat and wilderness reserve with more than 130 ancient rock art sites, many dating back over 10,000 years.

  • Nantes, France, the former industrial hub has the slogan, "the city turned upside down by art" and is filled with the weird and wonderful along an urban trail that features 30 points of interest.
