Consumer Cellular, a mobile phone service popular with seniors, has shifted its Phoenix customer-service workers to Tempe and plans to hire hundreds more in the next nine months.

The Oregon-based company is perhaps best known as the exclusive wireless provider for AARP members. This week its 280 Phoenix workers moved to a new 85,245 square-foot customer service center in the Tempe Commerce Park on South Roosevelt Street. The company plans to add 300 more employees by May.

"Our new facility in Tempe will allow us to hire hundreds of new employees so we can continue to provide the best customer service possible to our growing customer base," John Marick, the company's CEO, said in a statement. "We appreciate the support of the region as we've grown here, and we're committed to long-term growth of our Arizona facility and contributing to the local community."

Overall, the company reports more than 1,000 workers. In July, Consumer Cellular reached 1.5 million subscribers. The company focuses on those 50 and older, touting flexible plans.

Consumer Cellular's employees moved into the new Tempe location on Monday.
