Hawke, Gere to Be Honored at New York Film Festival

The Film Society of Lincoln Center will honor Ethan Hawke and Richard Gere in separate tributes as part of the New York Film Festival. Each will be the subject of one of the festival’s “An Evening With…” programs – Mr. Hawke on Sept. 30, Mr. Gere on Oct. 8. The “An Evening With…” galas are meant to recognize “the work of individuals who have made significant artistic contributions to film culture,” the society said.

This year’s events will have a new format. Instead of a dinner followed by the screening of a clip reel and a conversation with the honoree in the theater, the entire event will take place at the dinner itself, in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse at Lincoln Center, which the society feels allows for a more intimate presentation. Both Mr. Hawke and Mr. Gere will be interviewed by Kent Jones, the festival’s director.

Both have films in the festival. Mr. Hawke, whose films include “Boyhood” and “Before Midnight,” will attend as a director, with “Seymour: An Introduction,” a documentary about the pianist Seymour Bernstein. Mr. Gere, who is known for his performances in “Pretty Woman,” “Runaway Bride” and “Arbitrage,” stars in Oren Moverman’s “Time Out of Mind,” one of 30 films on the main slate of this year’s 17-day festival.

Previous honorees have included Pedro Almodóvar and Cate Blanchett.
