Any asymmetric founder-couples? (one experienced, one new)

We have the weird situation where I’m a 6-time startup guy (3 IPOs) but it’s my cofounder’s first time and she’s my fiancee and chief revenue officer.  Basically, she makes the money and I spend it to grow faster.  I’m the geek, she’s the domain expert. Anybody else like this?

Single founder living and working alone – life is hell

Out of school, I started studying for a professional course. It was boring, so I taught myself programming and started selling small online software. Things went well, and I got myself earning ~ $6k a month. I quit studies, moved to a new city, and started working on a startup idea. My current state, after…

How much equity do I give previous investors in my new venture?

My start up died, it was agonizing but I have moved on.  Some of my early investors were amazing- some were terrible.  I want to reward my great investors with some equity in my new start up because I never would have gotten my start with out them. How do I decide how much equity…

Some things just cannot be done by a startup

I’ve read quite a few unfortunate stories of founders that have spent their hard earned money trying to tackle a “big problem” with a “huge market” but finding little traction. I was one of these unlucky folks, trying to tackle one such opportunity. Thank goodness I woke up and quit before I went broke. There…

How do you know when it’s time to quit?

After over 15 months of full time effort I am seeing zero traction.  I can drive traffic to the site but it just won’t convert.  I’ve tried testing headlines, copy, layout, done user testing and calls, phone numbers on the site, live chat, personal outreach to potential customers in multiple markets.  Nothing. Zip, zilch.  not…

How to save a business …

Back in 2008 I started a SAAS for professional photographers without any outside funding.  I brought in another developer around the same time and it’s just been the two of us working full time on it ever since.  In the beginning we were making enough money to pay the bills, attend trade shows, do some…

Too early to onboard a TV celebrity advisor? How much equity?

We have attracted the interest of a TV personality, total random ask … but she’s interested in being involved with us. We met and connected at an event. We are an early-stage B2B product with low traction and trying to raise our seed round. Her team has asked me for what we want from her…

The first customer!

I’ve been working for close to 2 years on my e-commerce startup (while also being Mr. Mum) and last week made my first sale to someone not personally connected to me (friend, family etc.) It was such a great feeling (and a bit of a relief) to see all the work and processes come together…

Should I fire my cofounder?

He’s the Tech guy.  I’m the CEO. We just got accepted into a pretty notable accelerator.  All the funding we need will be given to us once we complete the project, but all of the problems I’ve been having with my cofounder for the past 8 months are about to boil over.  I take accountability…
