Welcome Professor Tracey Deutsch!

Big Announcements! New faculty in GWSS!

We warmly welcome both Aren Aizura and Annie Hill to the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies.

Aren Aizura

Aren Z. Aizura earned a PhD in cultural studies from the University of Melbourne in 2009. He held a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Women's and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women at Rutgers University between 2009-11. He also held a post-doctoral fellowship in Gender, Race and Science in the Department of Gender Studies at Indiana University.

Aizura’s interdisciplinary research looks at how queer and transgender bodies shape and are shaped by technologies of race, gender, transnationality, medicalization and political economy. He studies gender reassignment surgery tourism in Thailand and elsewhere; trans and queer migration, especially queer/trans involvement in transnational economies of care work; and looking at the circuitry of nationalism, and biopolitics and value as they relate to gender variant life.

Aizura's current book project is called Mobile Subjects: Transnational Imaginaries of Gender Reassignment Surgery. With Susan Stryker, he co-edited the Transgender Studies Reader 2 (Routledge, 2013). His articles can be found in the journals Inter Asia Cultural Studies, Medical Anthropology, and Asian Studies Review, and in numerous books including Queer Necropolitics (Routledge, 2014), Transgender Migrations (2011), Queer Bangkok (Hong Kong University Press, 2011), and Trans Feminist Perspectives In and Across Gender (Tempe UP, 2012).  He is a member of the Editorial Board of TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Annie Hill

Annie Hill earned a Ph.D. in Rhetoric from the University of California in Berkeley. Her research and teaching focuses on rhetorical theory and criticism, feminist theory, and race theory, including geneaologies of Western race science. She also has a background in socio-legal scholarship, and is interested in legal rhetoric, modern jurisprudence, and public policy.

She is currently working on a book titled "This Modern Day Slavery: Sex Trafficking in the United Kingdom", which analyzes the discourse and development of British anti-trafficking campaigns. Annie recently won the Multicultural Research Award from the Institute for Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy.

Jordyn Lehmann received the GWSS Helen Hawthorne Hartung Award. This is a $500 award to a student submitting an outstanding GWSS-related paper or creative project.

 

Events

In Memoriam of Dr. Doris Marquit, long-time GWSS scholar, activist, and teacher

We were saddened to hear that Doris Marquit passed away on May 29th, 2014 after a brief illness. Doris received her PhD in 1978 and taught frequently in the Departments of GWSS and English at the University of Minnesota. She was a long-standing member of the Communist Party, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and the DFL. A strong advocate for social justice, community organizing, and liberatory education, she was passionate about intersectional and materialist feminism, dedicated to GWSS, and established the Women's Studies Social Justice Fund for undergraduate students. Her warmth, sense of humor, and sharp mind will be greatly missed. In her honor, you can donate to the Women's Studies Social Justice Fund.
