What we offer

You could be on the fast track to success with the insights you gain while studying in our Social Science program. You will have a greater understanding of societal needs, diverse cultures and individual responsibility. Your viewpoints could prove vital to how a company or organization operates.

The Social Science program gives you the flexibility to explore anthropology, economics, geography, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, social work and sociology. You may also participate in an internship and earn academic credit while gaining valuable work experience. The Social Science major has an internship course designed specifically for students in this major.

Study abroad opportunities offer unique learning experiences and can be applied toward the degree. The Study Abroad Office oversees hundreds of programs in dozens of countries around the world.

Many of our faculty members in the social sciences are considered experts in their fields and have written hundreds of books and articles. They also have earned recognitions from the:

  • Texas State Historical Association
  • Southern Economic Association
  • American Political Science Association

Student organizations focusing on the social sciences help students network and learn more about particular fields of study. Among them are the Psi Chi international psychology honor society, the Geography Club and the Anthropology Student Association.

A secondary teaching certificate in social studies is available through a separate certification plan in collaboration with the College of Education.

We can help fund your education with financial assistance and scholarships. The College of Arts and Sciences offers various scholarships based on academic performance.

What to expect

The Social Science major will require you to complete at least 18 semester hours in a primary study area and an additional 30 semester hours in two or more complementary subject areas. For example, you could take six political science courses as your primary area and then four history courses, four psychology courses and two sociology courses for the additional hours. Out of these 48 semester hours in the major, at least 24 semester hours must be taken at the advanced level.

Our Career Center, Learning Center and professional academic counselors and advisors are among the many valuable resources that are available to you at UNT. The Career Center can provide advice about internships, future employment opportunities and getting hands-on experience in your major. The Learning Center offers workshops on speed reading, study skills and time management. Academic counselors and advisors will help you plan your class schedule each semester.

How to enroll at UNT

High school students

We encourage you to fulfill the graduation requirements for the distinguished level of achievement under the Texas Foundation, Recommended or Distinguished Achievement high school program or the equivalent.

In your junior year, take the SAT or the ACT and have your scores sent to UNT.

In your senior year, apply for admission at Apply Texas by March 1 and request that your high school transcript be sent to the UNT admissions office.

Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses can count toward college credit at UNT.

Transfer students

If you're attending a Texas community college, you should consult our online transfer guides, the UNT Undergraduate Catalog and an academic counselor or advisor to review your degree plan. Proper planning will allow you to receive the maximum amount of transfer credits.

Our Transfer Center will help you make a successful transition to college life at UNT by connecting you with a peer mentor and other campus resources. Each year, 3,900 students transfer to UNT. More information about the center is at transition.unt.edu.
