from academic fields to field academics

CSID is, at its core, a philosophic endeavor. Like all academic disciplines, philosophy has a specific disciplinary identity, one that for just over 100 years has perpetuated a closed discussion of philosophy by philosophers for other philosophers. Today, however, there is a very real sense in which being truly philosophical -- in the sense of the 2,500 year history of philosophy -- requires us to stop being (disciplinary) philosophers.

CSID seeks to break out of this disciplinary mold and re-cast philosophy as an interdisciplinary "field" endeavor that requires engagement with people outside of the discipline of philosophy (scientists, engineers, policy makers, etc.).

Interdisciplinarity is most often called upon as the best means of solving real-world problems. Yet, real-world problems require scientists, humanists, and educators to work not only with other academics, but also with members of the public and private sectors - decision makers, NGOs, and stakeholders groups. We call this "field academics" to emphasize the importance of taking academic knowledge into settings where its ideas are tested by real-world challenges.
