Last year, the Houston art fairs were the talk of the town, and most people were dubious that two fairs would be able to survive. Well, not only did both return this year, but a third satellite project has been added– The Pan Art Fair. Organized by Robert Boyd, author of the blog The Great [...]

According to the official press release, the second annual Houston Fine Art Fair (HFAF) exceeded its organizer’s expectations: “12,000 attended, millions of dollars changed hands. Over 2,000 works, from 500 respected artists, were offered from 80 galleries representing 12 countries and 34 cities.” Despite more mixed, and less fact-filled anecdotes about the fair’s performance from [...]

I have to admit that art fairs, in general, are not my thing. They seem exhausting for everyone involved from visitors to the gallery girls working the booths. With 80 participating galleries in this year’s Houston Fine Art Fair, my eyes were glazed over after about an hour at Reliant Center, and I had a [...]

Long-inheld breaths can be released with sighs of relief! Douglas Britt of the Houston Chronicle reports that the organizers of last weekend’s Houston Fine Art Fair were satisfied with the turnout, and have promised to return next year. The fair logged more than its target 10,000 visitors, and half the galleries represented reported sales.

Big cities with vibrant art scenes have big art fairs, right? Sure. So it stands to reason that Houston, home of lots of great art, should have one as well. In fact, Houston should have two of them. Oh, that’s right! They do! Since I didn’t really pay any attention to the scuffle concerning the [...]

Houston’s first art fair opens tonight from 6-9 with a $100 a ticket fundraiser benefiting the Core Program. I swung by the George R. Brown Convention Center yesterday as the Houston Fine Art Fair’s participating galleries were unloading and setting up. A lot of manual labor goes into making art and a significant amount goes [...]

This wasn’t meant to be a column about art fairs—it was meant to be about wealth and conservatism—but art fairs are something I know and wealth and conservatism are major players at fairs. I can’t find the exact quote I’ve been searching for so here’s my wonky memory at work: In either late 2008 or [...]

Last week I wrote about Houston’s dueling art fairs coming up this fall. Scheduled one month apart, each has a New York area organizer. It got me thinking about Dallas’s two art fairs last April, held on the same weekend and each locally organized. The fledgling Suite Art Fair debuted at the Belmont Hotel while [...]

I’m sure you’re already heard, but The Houston Fine Art Fair, inevitably to be known as “the first fair” arrives at the George R. Brown Convention Center from September 15-18. So you may have heard, Houston is getting an art fair. Um, actually two art fairs. There has been a ridiculous amount of controversy surrounding these fairs, a classic tempest in a teapot involving leaked email, competing fair organizers and collectors and galleries picking teams and various board members from the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, [...]
