Mesmer Eyes (2011) by Kathy Goodell was installed a the Grand Rapids Art Museum and seen by thousands of visitors during the competition. From a formal perspective, it was gorgeous and effectively installed. But it didn't even attempt to offer anything beyond the optical experience. It's easy to kvetch about ArtPrize but it does bring thousands of people into central Grand Rapids, mostly to look at art. For the scores of school kids, who were brought on ArtPrize field trips, the real attraction was a chance to be outdoors on a gorgeous weekday. And the art? Some of it was okay, although a lot of it was kind of awful.
