Opening reception for the artist Friday, November 16, 6-8pm
Bill's Junk is pleased to announce the opening of Shane Tolbert: Talk of Montauk, with an artist's reception on Friday, November 16, 2012. A solo show of new, smaller paintings produced during the artist's recent residency at the Edward Albee Foundation in Montauk, Long Island. Nine paintings, all under 20," raid the icebox of modernist tropes to stock the gallery like an exotic aquarium store. The exhibition will be on view Saturdays between November 17 and December 22, and by appointment at Bill's Junk (in the former Optical Project space) at 1125 E 11th st. Houston, TX 77009.
About Shane Tolbert:
Houston artist Shane Tolbert emerged from Corsicana, Texas to study at the University of Houston, then moved to Southern California, where he received an MFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2010. Even before he left, he had work in group shows at Williams Tower, the Joanna, and Lawndale Art Center. Since his return, the up-and-coming (there's no better word for it!) painter has been featured with Raymond Uhlir at UT's Visual Arts Center, with Cody Ledvina at Domy Books, Austin, at the Good Press Gallery in Glasgow, Scotland, and a solo show at Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery.
About Bill's Junk
Bill's Junk is an artist-curated exhibition space merging high art, low craft, nature and salvage, located near the intersection of Studewood and 11th Sts. in Houston Heights. Gallery owner Bill Davenport sheepishly admits that this is only his second show by a locally resident artist, and fears it will only be a prelude to Tolbert's inevitable departure for better things. Open Saturdays 12-5, by appointment at borabora@wt.net, call 713 863-7112, or, if you're feeling lucky, just stop by and ring the doorbell!
