Introduction to Printmaking, for High School Students and Adults - Marfa

Beginning in late January, Chinati will host a series of weekend workshops introducing participants to three distinct printmaking techniques: linocut, photo etching, and screenprinting. Each two-day workshop takes place on a consecutive Saturday and Sunday, from 1:00 – 5:00 PM both days. Local artists will teach the workshops, and each participant will create their own series of unique prints during a class.

The January workshop explores linocut, a relief printmaking technique similar to woodcut, and takes place on January 26 and 27. The linocut process involves using a linoleum block as a surface, cutting a design into the linoleum using a sharp chisel, inking the raised areas, and then printing the design onto paper multiple times to create a series.

Robert Arber will teach the linocut class, which takes place at Arber and Son Editions in downtown Marfa. The class fee, including materials, is $50, $25 for Chinati members. The class is free for Marfa High School art students.

No previous experience is necessary, but advance registration is required and class size is limited. Please register online here.
