February 2013

Australian jewelry label MANIAMANIA has grown into quite a cult label since their 2009 incarnation. The label's oversized gemstones are cradled by spindly, antiqued metallics; and cuffs, chains and hardware gracefully attach raw, organic pieces into complete accessories.

Valerie Steele is a Completist

To get the story straight in their encyclopedic Fashion Designers A-Z, Taschen relied on the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology to assemble its thorough catalog, documenting designers represented in the museum's collection.

Van Sarki Unmasks Burlesque

A contributor to the Interview website and Dossier Journal, Van Sarki has spent his career photographing a seemingly endless stream of strikingly beautiful individuals, lit softly, groomed impeccably, and captured in ethereal dusty-light-bust-portraits, gazing gently into the camera. "I don't like big productions," says Sarki. "I think my strength is allowing my subjects to relax around me and ingratiating them in an environment."

Weighing three tons, and comprised of 50 bronze bells, a carillon is just about the last thing you'd ever associate with a club DJ. Hendrik Weber, who records music under the name Pantha du Prince (among others) sees things differently.

Shilpa Ray on Stretching and Screaming

Most articles about musician and singer Shilpa Ray begin with her introduction to rock music. But there is more to Shilpa Ray than  a cute coming-of-age story. A powerful vocalist and skilled lyricist, Ray's last album with her band Her Happy Hookers,  Teenage and Torture, is filled with belting anguish.

A Snapshot with Kevin Mazur

As a professional photographer for Rolling Stone, Kevin Mazur has spent the majority of his career behind the camera, immortalizing moments for the likes of Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, and Ozzy Osbourne. In the last decade, though, after noticing a dramatic shift from those around him at concerts and red carpet events, an intrigued Mazur decided to turn the lens on his own industry to direct his first film, $ellebrity.

New Again: Ryan Gosling

Before his bona fide A-List status, before The Notebook, before any "Hey Girl" memes, Ryan Gosling was just another talented young actor (and former Mickey-Mouser) searching for his place in the movie business.

The Truth About Aneurin Barnard

In talking to Welsh-born actor Aneurin Barnard, it becomes quite clear that at 25, his eagerness to take on the identity-bending world of acting, and his love of the craft, is unparalleled. 2013 will certainly be a significant year for Barnard as he releases four films.

Weekend News Roundup!

Here's our compendium of pop-culture news you may have missed while you were doing more important things over the weekend.

Lipps Service: St. Barths Imitates Life

Scott's last few days in St. Barth's were spent hanging out with Brian Atwood and Todd Moscowitz and seeing a few famous folks like Simon Cowell, followed by a lovely day trip to St. Maarten and then the long trek back home to New York. But it's hard to begrudge "work" when what that means is shooting pictures of lovely models like Chloe Nørgaard, Liisa Winkler, and Selita Ebanks.

As its name would imply, the New Museum convenes artists on the precipice of fame. Of course, by dubbing them the "next big things," the institution assures their ascent is all the more rapid.

Wendell Castle Sets Up House at Friedman

The environment—a whimsical "nest" that appears to levitate above a spiral staircase set into an iron base, encircled by sensually curved furnishings—hovers somewhere between fantasy and functionality. Wendell Castle's "A New Environment," now at Chelsea's Friedman Benda gallery, echoes the sculptor's 1969 "Environment for Contemplation," a monastic, pod-like chamber that viewers could enter for a moment of solitary meditation.

Armchair Traveler: Color Matters

The art world too global for you? Each week, Interview highlights in pictures the shows you'd want to see if you could jetset from one international art hub to the next.
