Houston, Texas: Zoya Tommy Contemporary is pleased to present for the second time Oiran Goes to Wild West, a solo exhibition featuring new work by prominent Japanese artist Ushio Shinohara at the new 4411 Montrose location . The New York based artist will be showing concurrently in the MoMA's Tokyo 1955-1970: A New Avant-Garde.
Shinohara demonstrates the same high-energy approach in every medium he employs. Oiran Goes to Wild West comprises paintings, drawings, and sculptures depicting unique representations of everyday scenes from the eclectic urban landscape of New York City and the beaches of Bermuda and Miami.
Working primarily in acrylic gouache and colored ink, with some collage elements, Shinohara's cartoon-like compositions are infused with primary colors, a humorous spirit, and a violent painterly touch. The complexity of movement and impulsive nature that characterize Shinohara's visual language reflect his unyielding creative energy.
Ushio Shinohara was born in Tokyo (1932) and studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts from 1952-1957. In 1960 he founded a group called the Neo-Dadaism Organizers, which confronted political issues of postwar Japan. Shinohara moved to New York City in 1969, where he has based his practice since.
