Chris Burden: Metropolis II
Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
January 14 through 31, 2013
On view only at scheduled times, Burden’s massive cityscape is a monument to the quality of quantity, a classic Burden shock-and-awe technique. Thousands of matchbox-sized cars zip among buildings and trains, creating a cacophonous, mesmerizing tableau. It suggests a giant gerbil habitat, and is no doubt meant to appeal to that urban sense of being rats in a maze. Outstanding, thought-provoking, and highly entertaining. Bring the kids; bring the grandparents. A guaranteed crowd pleaser.
