Performance: Danny Tisdale

Saturday, January 19, 2013 | 2PM

In Transitions, Inc., Danny Tisdale becomes Tracey Goodman, the head of a fictitious company that specializes in transforming one’s physical appearance for the purpose of greater social access and financial reward.  In 1992, Tisdale spent two days standing on a crowded street corner advertising and promoting his company, whose tagline is “we turn minorities into majorities,” and its products. Tisdale’s performance confronted passers with questions concerning societal norms surrounding appearance, class, and the construction of identity.  The promotional materials for Tisdale’s company included products such as hair relaxers, skin lighteners, and hair extensions.  These products are featured as an installation work and will be on view for the duration of the exhibition.

Danny Tisdale (b. 1959) is an artist, educator, and community activist who lives and works in New York.  Much of Tisdale’s work focuses on the nexus of identity, race, politics, and the push for societal change.

Performance: Kalup Linzy

Saturday, January 26, 2013 | 7PM

Special Location: Houston Museum for African American Culture, 4807 Caroline Street, Houston 77004

Introducing Kaye (Romantic Loner) (2012) debuts one of Kalup Linzy’s newest characters, Kaye, a forlorn artist coming to terms with a series of failed relationships.  Using the video as a backdrop to Kaye’s experiences, Linzy will perform the soundtrack created for the Romantic Loner project (a feature length film), accompanied by a five-member band.

Kalup Linzy (b. 1977) is a multidisciplinary artist who utilizes familiar tropes from pop culture—notably the melodrama found in soap operas—to highlight the complexities of race, gender, sexuality, and class. Linzy originally released his video shorts episodically on YouTube, which allowed viewers to follow the trajectory of the characters in, for example, his series All My Churen (2003).

Performance: Trenton Doyle Hancock

Thursday, January 31, 2013 | 6:30PM

In Off-Colored, sleep-deprived artist Trenton Doyle Hancock snoozes atop a wooden structure, covered in a colorful, fur-striped sheet. Upon awaking to the sound of an alarm clock, Hancock is fed huge bowls of various colors of Jell-O. And, in an amusing twist on the logic of consumption, he expels colorful balloons out of the rear of the structure. This performance, like much of Hancock’s work, engages in the artist’s epic narrative of the Mounds and their nemesis, the Vegans–sets of mythical creatures that are in constant battle.

Trenton Doyle Hancock (b. 1974) is known for his ever-evolving saga of the Vegans and the Mounds, half-animal, half-plant creatures, that live, love, dream, and die all in the narrative the artist creates in his work. His work not only investigates moral quandaries and Biblical themes, but also the formal qualities that are inherent to a given medium.
