Meet the 2013 Sundance Filmmakers #21: David Lowery Tells An Outlaw Love Story in 'Ain't Them Bodies Saints,' Starring Rooney Mara

Filmmaker David Lowery decided he wanted to make movies shortly after turning 8-years-old, which coincidentally was the same year he moved from Wisconsin to Texas. He's been doing that pretty much ever since. Known best as an editor (he cut last year's festival hit "Sun Don't Shine" and Shane Carruth's anticipated "Upstream Color," making its world premiere at Sundance this month), Lowery helmed one of the most buzzed about films in the U.S. Dramatic competition, "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck.

What It's About: "An outlaw sets out across the Texas countryside to find his wife, and the daughter he's never met."

What's It's REALLY About: "It's about watching archetypes fall apart. It's also about that difficult convergence of romance and responsibility we all deal with at some point in our lives. We always hope romance wins out, until it doesn't. I'm not making this sound very cheerful!"

My Chief Challenge: "Figuring out how to maintain a handmade approach while working within a much larger machine. I think we pulled it off."

What I Want Audiences To Take Away: "I hope that audiences come away feeling like they've just listened to a terrific old folk song they'd never heard before; the sort that sticks in your head and your heart in the best possible way."

Some Inspirations: "Lots of old classic movies, but music more than anything else: folks like Joanna Newsom, Bonnie Prince Billy and John Prine contributed a great deal to the way the film turned out."

What I Shot On: "35mm."

What I Have Up Next: "I'm writing two things, one of which will hopefully turn into a movie before the year is out. And I've also got a tiny little documentary that I need to make some headway on. I was supposed to be shooting it this fall but this movie kept me busy..."
