Environmental Contaminants Encyclopedia
Entries, Filenames
This document contains information on 118 entries (each entry is a different chemical substance and a separate file). The topics include different chemicals, chemical combinations, and a few related topics.
Combination entries include various mixtures such as petroleum products. The entries include:
- The 30 entries covering the oil products most commonly spilled into fresh and marine waters of the U.S., according to EPA.
- The 63 entries covering other oil-related topics. These topics include compounds found in oil products as well as general oil topics such as oil spills, petroleum general, total petroleum hydrocarbons, and combination topics such as BTEX compounds (Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl Benzene, and Xylene compounds) and PAHs in general.
- Cyanide, high priority metals, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs/chlorinated organic solvents).
In addition to the 118 entry files on chemical substances, there is one file for References Cited ("REFERENC" file), and one file for Synonyms ("SYNONYMS" file).
The following file names are used. Once you have identified the file of interest, go to the Environmental Contaminants Encyclopedia Listing, and click on the file of interest (Adobe Acrobat Files end in the extension ".pdf"):

Notes:
In some versions of this product, some of the underlined spaces in the file names were the "&" sign. For example, the file name PH_AN_C1 was PH&AN_C1 in certain versions.
PCBs, Pesticides, Dioxins, Dibenzofurans, and various other high priority contaminants (such as various organochlorines) were not included in this distribution because of funding and time constraints. The 118 chemical substance files chosen for finalization were chosen based on funding sources (which emphasized oil topics) as well as the editors' ability to update and finalize files in the standard format within a reasonable period of time. Updating and finalizing complex summaries for PCBs, Dioxins, and the many pesticides of concern would have been another large project.
The current document is the result of staff efforts to pull together a usable product as a part-time effort of one professional assisted by the part-time efforts of several graduate students. In the absence of continued funding, it was decided to disseminate the information compiled to date on 118 substances for the benefit of potential users.
