Welcome

Welcome to OMNI Reports portion of the NIC, the Navigation Information Connection for the Upper Mississippi River System administered by the US Army Corps of Engineers.  The Upper Mississippi River System includes Federal commercial navigation projects above the Mississippi River’s confluence with the Ohio River at Cairo, Illinois.  These Federal commercial navigation projects are the Upper Mississippi River, Kaskaskia River, Illinois Waterway, Black River, St. Croix River and the Minnesota River. These Federal navigation projects are projects authorized by the US Congress for the purpose of providing transportation systems for barges to move commodities.  Typically their makeup includes a maintained 9-foot deep channel and a series of locks and dams.  Navigation lights, signage and buoys are used to identify the channel.

NIC endeavors to provide useful information primarily to users of the projects, but also to those having a general interest in the Upper Mississippi River System.  On NIC you will find information pertaining to tow boats in the system, channel and lock conditions, river stages, maps, rules and regulations, water safety, navigation notices, water safety, pictures, videos, etc.  The site also provides information to contact the appropriate person to ask questions or request further information

Other Rivers included in Selective OMNI Reports: Arkansas, Chicago River, Clinch, Cumberland, Green/Barren, Kanawha, Monongahela, Ohio, Tennessee.

Objective: The Navigation Information Center (NIC) is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers administered web site that provides information related to the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). The UMRS includes the Federal navigation projects for the Minnesota River, St. Croix River, Black River, Illinois Waterway, Kaskaskia River and the Upper Mississippi River (above the confluence of the Ohio River at Cairo, IL). The intent of NIC is to provide easily accessible information on the operation, condition and use of the UMRS.
