Jellyfish blooms are important events controlling plankton dynamics in coastal waters worldwide, yet factors that influence bloom development are not well understood. A recent Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research (CSCOR)-sponsored study developed an ecological forecasting system that predicts the probability and location of the sea nettle Chrysaora quinquecirrha in Chesapeake Bay. In addition to predicting where this nuisance species may interfere with water-based recreation, this system may help guide current multi-species management efforts. Moreover, the approach used here may be applied to other plankton species, such as harmful algal blooms.
