What to Expect as a Corrections Officer

Service. These are all words that are used to describe the character of the exceptional men and women that answer the call to serve their community as Corrections Officers at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center. As partners in the law enforcement community, our Officers play a critical role in protecting the public and executing our mission to provide a safe and secure environment for our staff and the inmates in our custody. For those who rise to the challenge of an exciting career in Corrections, MDC offers the opportunity to learn, grow, excel and achieve new heights personally as you develop the knowledge and skills to carry out the role of Corrections Officer. 
 
As a Corrections Officer at one of the nations best operated jails, you will be responsible for maintaining effective control in our direct supervision housing units where you will work one-on-one with inmates to proactively manage and diffuse potential issues before they occur. Some of your daily responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
  • Communicate effectively with a varied population of offenders including individuals from diverse racial, cultural and economic backgrounds.
  • Directly manage general inmate behavior in areas assigned.
  • Make periodic checks of the housing unit to ensure that the environment is safe and secure for staff and inmates.
  • Maintaining an accurate count of the inmates assigned to the housing unit.
  • Performing personal and cell searches to prevent the introduction of contraband into the facility.
  • Maintain control and discipline of the inmates including the use of physical restraint and devices as necessary.
  • Instruct inmates in the general housekeeping and sanitation of the housing areas.
  • React quickly and calmly to emergency situations and make effective decisions based training and policy while in stress situations and circumstances.
  • Tactfully and courteously establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, internal staff and law enforcement agencies.
