Q: How do I apply?
 
You may do so via the Internet at https://hr.bernco.gov/jobs/ or in person at the Bernalillo County Department of Human Resources located on the 4th Floor at Civic Plaza (Phone: 505-468-1500). 
 
Q: What kind of person makes a good Corrections Officer?
 
We are looking for diverse men and women from all walks of life with a strong moral compass who will do what is right no matter what situation faces them. The right person will be a role model, have excellent communication skills, have the ability to maintain a positive outlook in a challenging environment and have a strong sense of service, community and commitment.
 
Q: How long will it take before I am selected to start?
 
Our target to complete the selection process is approximately two weeks. This timeline is highly dependent on the background investigation process and may take longer depending on the responses that we receive while processing your information. Once you have passed the department selection process, you will be required to undergo pre-employment physical examination and drug screening prior to hire. Your active involvement in this process will allow it to proceed as quickly as possible.

Q: What documents will I have to provide during the selection process?
 
You will need to provide your high school diploma or GED, valid driver’s license, birth certificate and a social security card during the selection process.
 
Q: Where is your training academy held?
 
MDC’s Training Academy is located on-site at our facility.
 
Q: How long is the MDC Training Academy?
 
The Training Academy is made up of six (6) weeks of classroom, hands on and on-the-job training.
 
Q: Do I live on-site throughout my training in the Academy?
 
No, our academy training is conducted Monday through Friday in eight hour blocks and you get to go home every night.
 
Q: I have experience in Corrections at other facilities. Do I have an opportunity to earn more money as a result?
 
MDC offers a Lateral Entry Program for Corrections Officers with a year or more of experience. To get details regarding your qualification for this program, contact one of our recruiters.
 
Q: I’m applying as a Lateral Entry Officer, do I have to complete the MDC Academy if I have already completed another corrections academy?
 
Yes. Although corrections concepts are similar from facility to facility, we believe that completion of the MDC Training Academy will best prepare you for operational success in our facility.
 
Q: What shifts will I be required to work?
 
MDC operates 24-hours a day on eight hour shifts. Corrections Officers must be able and willing to work any of the three shifts. Day: 7:00 AM-3:00 PM, Swing: 3:00 PM-11:00 PM and Night: 11:00 PM-7:00 AM.
